Your current grade should cover everything except the final. The weight is how much the final counts toward the course.

The formula

Your course grade is your current grade weighted by everything except the final, plus the final score weighted by its share. Solving for the final score gives: needed = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight.

Example: with an 86 now, a final worth 25%, and a goal of 90, you need (90 − 86 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 102%. That means a 90 isn’t reachable without extra credit. Check your syllabus, since some instructors drop a low score or round grades.

Worked example

Your current grade is 84%, and the final exam is worth 25% of the course grade. To finish with 80%, you need (80 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (80 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 68% on the final.

To finish with a 90%, you’d need (90 − 63) ÷ 0.25 = 108%, which isn’t possible without extra credit. The calculator flags results above 100% like this.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don’t know my current grade exactly?

Use the grade shown in your course site, or work it out from your category scores with the weighted grade calculator, then enter it here.

How is “worth 25%” used?

The final counts for 25% of the course grade and everything else counts for the other 75%. So your current grade is multiplied by 0.75 and your final score by 0.25.

What if my class drops the lowest score or has a replacement policy?

Policies like “the final replaces your lowest exam” change the math. Recalculate your current grade with that rule applied first, then use this calculator.

What score do I need just to pass?

Enter the passing grade (often 60% or 70%) as your goal. If the answer is 0% or below, you’ve already passed, as long as you take the final.
